German Shepherd dogs are herding, working, therapy, and service dogs. The German Shepherd’s ability to guard his people and property comes from his herding instincts. When visitors approach the family house he will begin barking, and if a stranger approaches the family children, he will begin a low growl. Because of this instinct, the German Shepherd does not greet everyone with a smile and a wagging tail. Instead, the German Shepherd has the ability to discern between friendly and dangerous situations. If necessary, German Shepherds will stand firm and look the intruder in the eyes. Still, known friends will be recognized and greeted with a slight wag of the tail.
